First Recognized As A Breed: Though pedigrees for Bull Terriers date to the mid-1800's, the first breed standard was written in 1935. The current AKC standard was approved on July 9, 1974.
AKC GROUPING: Terrier
APPEARANCE: With a short coat that highlights their strong, muscular build, Bull Terriers have an oval head and a short, tapering tail. Their small triangular eyes are sunken and dark. Their ears are small, thin and capable of being heald stiffly erect. The AKC recognizes two color varieties: solid white with or without colored head markings; or, colored, which ranges from solid red or brindle to a combination with black, tan, or white.
#1 PREVENTABLE HEALTH PROBLEM: Bull Terriers exposed to airborne allergens, or flea, mosquito, or mite bites can develop severe skin allergies. Reaction can range from incessant itching to a wide outbreak of hives or a rash. As such, veterinarian recommended parasite preventive measures, through either topical solutions and/or oral medication, may be necessary.
PREFERENCES: Notorious chewers with strong jaws, Bull Terriers need appropriately durable toys, offered under continuous supervision. Without a selection of suitable toys, many will turn to any available household item and eagerly ingest any pieces, which could result in an intestinal impaction that may require surgery to remove.
BEST FEAUTRES: Despite their stubborn nature, Bull Terriers are very playful, intelligent and clownish. These traits allow most Bull Terriers to form a strong bond with their human families, with whom they love to play. However, because of their playful personality most require consistent obedience trainingfrom a young age to keep their independent nature in check.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO OWNERS: Bull Terriers are exciting and energetic. When combined with their high level of intelligence, these active dogs can nose their way into an abundance of trouble. Therefore, they are best suited to families who can satisfy their curiosity and playfulness through continual interaction, activity, and supervision.

Bull Terrier Breed Profile:
The breed with the honor of winning the 2006 Westminster Kennel Club's Best in Show, the well-trained Bull Terrier is a friendly, affectionate, and loyal dog. With their distinct "egg shaped" head, these active dogs can bring an exciting energy to almost any family. They were first established by mating a Bulldog with the now extinct white English Terrier. Interestingly, these dogs usually bark only when necessary; therefore, when you hear a Bull Terrier barking, it would be wise to pay attention.

Beautifully Ugly
The Bull Terrier, with his powerful physique and distinctive, egg-shaped head, could not really be mistaken for any other breed. To many people who do not know the breed, the Bull Terrier with his Roman nose and small eyes - is just plain ugly. However, to those who love them, they are 'beautifully ugly', and have a charm all of their own. A charm, that is appreciated not only by the ordinary person in the street, but also by Royalty.
Every 'man about town' wished to own.
The Bull Terrier has become an alert, active, muscular and handsome dog that every 'man about town' wished to own.
Fearless but well mannered

The price you pay for your dog is little compared to the love and devotion he will return over the many years he'll be with you. With proper care and affection, your pup should live to a ripe old age; thanks to modern veterinary science and improvements in canine nutrition, dogs today are better maintained and live longer. It is not uncommon to see dogs living well into their teens.

Bull Terrier Stories Loyalty, Protection.
I'm reading books on Bull Terriers and these stories I HAVE to share.....
1. One dog boldly revealed the murderer of his master by fierce barking to the point that the murderer, thoroughly frightened babbled a confession.
2. Another was left tending a young child on a snowy winter night and saved the child's life by preventing the fire from going out. As the fire glowed low, the dog brushed some ashes from the cool edge of the fire upon some unlighted coals that were too warm to touch. Then with his nose, he shoved the new coals into place to keep the fire going long enough for his master to return and the child to avoid frostbite or death.
3. Six month bull terrier never having ventured to swim went with his master one day to the pool. The master climbed the ladder to the diving board and dived in, disappearing beneath the surface of the water. The dog, seeing it's master swallowed up by the water, threw caution to the winds, actually clambered up the stairs to the diving board, and dove in. Landing on top of it's master, the dog seized him by the hair and pulled him out of the pool.
4. Stories of the tender affection that Bull Terriers have shown for children are legion. In one case, a Bull Terrier was guarding two small children in a downstairs den which faced out on the backyard through a glass door. A rug caught fire, filling the room with smoke. The Bull Terrier, with a powerful thrust of his hind legs, shoved a chair through the glass door to ventilate the room and then grabbed the rug in his teeth, suffering burns himself as he yanked it away from the children. The parents, who were outside heard the commotion and rushed in to rescue the children and praise their pet.
